Below Region Nine Development Commission has compiled a series of online resources. The resource’s title, description, hints about how to use it (usage), and link are provided.
Title: Minnesota population estimates: number and characteristics of the current population
Description: The Minnesota State Demographic Center is required by law to produce annual population and household estimates for counties, cities and townships. Estimates are released in July and are benchmarked to April 1 of the previous year. The estimates are used to determine local government aid and levy limits. Population and household estimates for cities and townships within the seven-county Twin Cities area as well as the counties themselves (Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott and Washington counties) are produced independently by the Metropolitan Council.
Usage: Obtain a report by selecting an area and category followed by any number of years. To select multiple years, hold down the “Ctrl” key and click on the desired years.

Title: Bureau of Economic Analysis – Regional Fact Sheets (BEARFACTS)
Description: Fact sheet about an area’s personal income and gross domestic product.
Usage: Contains most recently compiled economic statistics. Data presented at State, County, and Metropolitan Statistical Area. Compares sub-regions to their macro-regions.

Title: Minnesota Unemployment Statistics LAUS (Local Area Unemployment Statistics) Data
Description: Provide data such as the number of people in the labor force, the number of people employed, how many people are unemployed, and the unemployment rate.
Usage: Data is available for the State, Counties, large Minnesota Cities, Metro/Micro Statistical Areas, and Economic Development Regions (9 Counties of South Central Minnesota). Sub-regions can be compared to their Macro-regions. Historical data available for trend analysis.

Title: HUD – Local jurisdictional thresholds for low-moderate income households
Description: Provides current formulated median family income by county. Additionally provides income thresholds based on the number of people in a family. Useful for grant applications.
Usage: First select the appropriate year. Select “FY____ Income Documentation System”. After selecting the desired geography, the user is provided a page containing a summary of how the final FY 2010 Income Limits (ILs) were updated and developed starting with the 2000 Census benchmark and including update factors from 2008 American Community Survey (ACS) data. The tables on the summary page include links to complete detail on how the data were developed.

Title: The Minnesota Center for Health Statistics
Description: The core functions of the Center for Health Statistics include the collection and analysis of health-related data, the design and implementation of public health surveys, coordination of health data collection efforts at the state and local level, and the provision of technical assistance and consultation.
Usage: Multiple resources with in-depth health, birth, death, and population data.

Title: Longitudinal Employer Household Dynamics – On The Map
Description: OnTheMap provides an easy-to-use interface for creating, viewing, printing and downloading workforce related maps, profiles, and underlying data. Based on 2002-2009 LEHD Origin Destination Employment Statistics (LODES), OnTheMap is a unique resource for mapping the travel patterns of workers and identifying small-area workforce characteristics.
Usage: Search for an area of interest and follow instructions for analysis. Refer to documentation for detailed explanation of terminology.

Description: Interactive thematic mapping tool by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED). Uses various sources of data including state economic data and census data.

Description: Minnesota Compass is a social indicators project that measures progress in our state, its seven regions, 87 counties and larger cities. Compass tracks trends in topic areas such as education, economy and workforce, health, housing, public safety, and a host of others.
