Comprehensive Economic Development Strategies

Report Summary

The Region Nine Development Commission is the designated Economic Development District (EDD) for the nine county area of South Central Minnesota (Blue Earth, Brown, Faribault, Le Sueur, Martin, Nicollet, Sibley, Waseca, and Watonwan Counties) and is responsible for preparing the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategies (CEDS) update report.

The CEDS document reviews the defining characteristics of South Central Minnesota and the current economic environment which influences public sector long range strategic planning.  The private sector is solicited for input into the CEDS along with professional economic development groups and individuals.  The data researched, analyzed, and presented within this document can provide a quantitative foundation for developing ideas focused on growth, sustainability, and innovation.

The South Central Minnesota CEDS is the result of a planning process designed to enhance the economic growth of the region.  The purpose of the CEDS is to create a blue print for the creation of jobs, foster more stable and diversified economies, and create a business friendly environment.  It provides a mechanism for coordinating the efforts of individuals, organizations, local governments and private industry concerned with economic development. The CEDS update report will review the population and economic changes that have occurred in the region. From these changes it develops ideas for stakeholders to consider as strategies for improving the economy of the area. If followed, this plan will serve as a blueprint for the action necessary to improve the quality of life in the area.  The CEDS Committee is made up of 21 members. This large committee is useful because it convenes a broad group for a comprehensive review. This ensures participation and engagement from multiple sectors throughout the region. Areas represented on the committee include: Private Business, Post-Secondary Education, Labor, Education, Government, and Community Based Organizations.
